I do not believe in magical thought due to the fact that our public, low standard school teaches me to be uncreative and unimaginative. Additionally, I place logic over superstition which prevents me from believing in things I cannot prove exist. I do not believe in Santa, the tooth fairy, in Jesus or in God. I perceive most religions as based on individual's imaginations that become the basis of organizations. These beliefs are not of their followers, but are of the creators of these beliefs. I instead am spiritual and philosophical. I am merely an agnostic adolescent.
I do believe in magical thought because i consider it to be more of imagination. I think someone's magical thought is when they use their imagination to think anything they want, instead of only listening to what people around them are saying. I percieve it to be somewhat like daydreaming. Although some people may not consider that "magical" it's someones way of blocking out reality & creating their own version of how they wish things were, and that to me can be considered "magical thought.
Magical thought is a quite interesting thing. It could be real or not, I have no real descision. If I had to choose I would say it is real because after all isn't some of what we create with technology magical?
Believing in “magic” might sound stupid to most people. Fairies, dragons, wizards, witches, goblins, giants, and so on are magical. Yes, they are, but only in fairytales. The “magic” that I’m talking about is the one that exists inside every individual. For example, we were told when we were little about Santa and how he flies on his sled and delivers presents to every good boy and girl. Eventually, we found out that there isn’t a Santa, but there is a little bit of Santa in everybody. As a result, the purpose of Christmas is the spirit of giving. Like I said before, magic isn’t always spells and curses; it’s about every day miracles. What’s magical is for someone to survive cancer, a near death experience, a natural disaster, along with saving a persons’ life, and finding cures for mental illnesses. Even the smallest things can be miracles such as saying “no” to drugs, helping others, or taking the time to benefit another. They are countless miracles happening every day that we don’t even realize. In my opinion, magical thought can be perceived in many different ways depending on the creativity of the individual. As for me, I do believe in magical thought.
Before I can say if I believe in magical thought I had to think about what my definition of magical thought really was. I came up with two definitions; the idea of magic and "magical" things that happen with religion. In the case of magic as in magicians that make things appear and disappear, I do not believe in that. I think there is always a back door in every magic trick and by human nature; many of the magic tricks we see could never happen in actuality. Now, before I go into my thoughts about “magic” in religion I want to say I do not think that the things that happen with religion are really magical, but I am saying there are things that could not and do not happen on a regular basis. To continue with that thought, I definitely believe in that. For example, the things that happened between Adam and Eve go beyond an average human’s every day life, but at some point they did happen. So in a sense that would be considered magical because it is not something that humans completely understand and relate with.
On a side note, I think magic exists in every human to some degree. The Tooth Fairy, Santa, and The Easter Bunny are all magical things, but all children grow up believing in those mystical characters. So in that sense, magic exists in everybody at some point in their life.
Overall, as a child I believed in those mystical characters that exist only in a child’s imagination. I also believe in the “magic” with religion. In conclusion, I do believe in magic to a certain extent.
My opinion is a lot like that of the other Nick’s. How am I expected to believe in something that I have never seen, or that has no scientific evidence to back it? In other words, I do not believe in fairies, witches, or goblins, and after thinking about it maybe even God (that’s not to say I don’t ask for favors here and there). And it‘s not just limited to wizards and what not, I also don’t believe in the “every day magic”, or miracles, that others were talking about, those have another name; coincidence.
Magic has many different definitions. Illusions created by magicians can be considered magic, although it is truly just one person tricking another. This kind of magic is obviously not supernatural. "The art of producing a desired effect or result through the use of incantation or various other techniques that presumably assure human control of supernatural agencies or the forces of nature" (dictionary.com) is a more controversial definition of magic. Another definition of the supernatural magic is "any extraordinary or mystical influence, charm, power, etc"(dictionary.com). I believe in magic to a certain extent; not the magic portrayed in Harry Potter, but in magical force. Sometimes things happen and nothing in the natural world can justify or explain them. According to the definition of magic, even something such as karma could be considered magic, as it is an extraordinary or mystical influence. I believe in karma, therefore I guess I do believe in a form of magic. Magic is not necessarily limited to the common understanding of what magic is.
Many people use the argument that there is no proof of magic. Although we do not have any proof as to the existence, do we have any proof that is does not exist? Do we have any reason to doubt the unknown?
No I don't believe in magical thought such as witchcraft and voodoo and I would never pay to get my "fortune" read. That is the kind of magical belief that I don't believe in. However I do admit I am sometimes superstitious. When it comes to something like sports and something good happens I try to not move hoping that another good thing will happen. Or if I do good on a test I try to study the exact same way, even if I didn't study for that first test. So if you consider that a type of magical thought then I suppose I do believe in magical thought. IT all depends on your interpretation of what is considered magical. When I think of magical thought I think of stuff like Harry Potter so I consider myself a non-believer in magical thought.
I use to believe in magical thought when I was younger. I use to believe in the tooth fairy and what ever else my parents made seem real. Now, I do not believe in any of it due to the fact that one who wants to collect a bunch of other people's teeth and two when you do some exploring you can find those hidden holiday gifts that your parents are supposedly holding for santa or the hanukkah fairy. I do however believe in god but that is based on religious beliefs, not magical. People can believe in magical thought all they want I will not destroy their belief in these magical thoughts just because I do not believe in it. I would much rather see someone be happy in believing in a magical spirit than be miserable knowing that they do not exist.
My definition of magical thought is anything that I consider logically and scientifically impossible. For example; holiday characters, super powers, and gods and goddesses. I do not consider imagination to be magical thought. Imagination is an expression of ideas, and it is not always "magically" based. For example, you can imagine something realistic. You don't always imagine that Santa or the Easter Bunny is real. You can express magical thought through imagination, but imagining is not magical thought. I do not believe in magical thought. I have never believed in the Easter Bunny or God. Magical thought and most things associated with it is developed for kids to understand things, celebrate, and grow up to be better people.
I believe in magic! Even though I now know that the magic that magicians do is purely an illusion, which sadly I was disappointed to discover. Magical thought to me is the believing in the so called make-believe, the creatures and ideas that are criticized and titled "impossible and nonexistant" by society; however, I think that anything is possible, that there are no bounds to the imagination and if you can think it, it can happen. Call me crazy or whatever but without the unrealistic ideas that float around what fun would we have. For instance, what would childhood be like for little girls without unicorns, fairies and happily ever after with our prince charmings. And for guys, what fun would it be if there was no big foot?! It's the make believe that gives us that little bit of happiness. I mean these mystical creatures are apart of how we live and what we believe in.
Magical thought is an interesting two words put together in a question because it can mean many different things to people from different cultures, religions, and teachings. Magical thought to me is the creative aspects we find in society, from photography to doodles, a good amount of us have something to express ourselves and if we do not honestly that is a tad sad. But really, magical thought is the ability to conceptualize something, even if it is a tiny gadget.
So due to my interpretation of "magical thought" I find it does exist, without it we would not have computers, light bulbs, the wheel, and even... yes... ipods.
I do and don’t believe in magic. When I was younger I fully believed in it after going to many magic shows, but later I realized that they were just tricking the audience. Still, some of the things they do I think are pretty crazy. I think there does have to be magic though in everyday life, cause how would we have gotten to the way we are together without using someone imagination and making it a reality? Magic to me is all about imagination and thought, so it all depends on how much you want to believe in it. Obviously things like Santa and the Tooth Fairy aren't real, but that doesn’t mean that to someone they cant be. There are other things such as horoscope and karma which are other forms of magic that a lot of people believe in and others do not. I fully believe in karma cause I think everything happens for a reason, and when my horoscope is dead on I think that’s really freaky. Most of the time its not though, and when people twist theirs to match what's going on in their life, then I think its taking the magic a little too far.
What is magical thought? Well let me explain what I believe it is. I believe magical thought doesn’t exist. I thoroughly examined the Internet and came to find that there was no information about magic. Ok, now maybe parents tell there kids that Santa Clause is real and he brings toys down from the chimney, but the truth is once kids grow up they lose interest in those types of things. Kids all around the world grow up believing in all sorts of magic, from the Tooth Fairy, to Santa Clause, to Chanukah Harry. But when they get older all those thought go away because the real truth is magical thought is your own imagination that your parents enforce you to believe while grower older and wiser. So the answer to my question is no, I don’t think magical thought exist! Without adults or parents teaching kids what there beliefs should be, no kid would know what Santa Clause is, or the Tooth Fairy! These beliefs were inherited by our ancestors and as our tradition we pass our beliefs to our kids’ in hope they will obtain them and pass them to their generation.
Believing in magical thought is accepting magic as true. People are misinterpreting the definitions of believe, magic, and thought. In addition, people are contradicting themselves and giving absurd, vague answers. You cannot believe and not believe in magic, it is not real and real at the same time. There is only one truth. You either believe in magical thought. As I said previously, I personally do not believe in magical thought. I understand the definitions for magic, thought, and believe. Please question your own actions, beliefs, perspectives to understand yourself more and the truth to your being.
Fine ill write about what everyone else considers this so called "magical thought" to be... even though I consider it "the supernatural."
Do I believe in the supernatural? Yes and No... I used to but with time passing comes moments worth learning from and as I grow older and older I tend to find that all we can hold true is what we can hold as fact. Some people believe in god or some kind of higher power and alike some believe the magical thought is like god or a higher power, but I strongly believe it is not magical thought that we interpret as a higher power but mother nature. I believe in mother nature and all we have created from it, oil we pump from the ground, toys we make in factories, ideals we hold for freedom, justice, and t he pursuit of happiness... all of these are what I believe in, not something unseen and unknown.
I will agree to the notion that humanity as a whole tends to cling to irrational thoughts, actions, and cult like followings when society comes into crisis, i.e. nazi germany and the crucible. But human irrationality is by nature not rational and once we leave the major state of this blissfulness we do see, as times past have revealed, that we hold facts and not fiction true to our hearts.
So it is not a matter of opinion or a matter of perception but rather a matter of reality or idealism. Do I believe in facts and the rational, yes. Do I believe in the unknown, unseen, unreal, and overall idealist bliss that in the past has caused mass murder, death, and cult-like followings... no.
In my opinion, I do not believe in "magical thought" due to the fact that I have seen my parents put presents under the Christmas tree and I have woken up during the middle of the night while my mother was trying to get away with taking my tooth and replacing it with a twenty dollar bill. I have attempted to research on "magical thought" on the internet and as I predicted nothing came up that was useful because "magical thought" just doesn't exist! All that exists in "magical thought" is kids' imaginations that their parents make them believe when they are young, but when the kids grow older and more mature they tend to realize that Santa Clause and the tooth fairy are their parents' little prank they play on them when they are young.
There is no right or wrong answer to what magical thought is, its meaning varies on the person. To believe in it is to say you are open to different views, to reject it doesn't make you any different. To me "magical thought" is just two words with two different meanings I'm not saying I believe in it or that I deny it, i accept it.
What is magical thought? If it is something you cannot touch or see, then magical thought is simply any abstract object or feeling. But if we dig deeper into this question, it can be shown that magical thought is a lot more than just feelings.
Like everyone else has said, we have been taught to believe in Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and possibly even superheroes. But as we grow older and wiser, we realize that proof is needed to believe that anything exists, as well as logic and reasoning. Is it reasonable or logical that Peter Parker got bit by a spider, transferred its DNA into him, and now he is Spider Man? No. It is not logical at all, because humans possess no similar traits to spiders. It cannot be proven; it is not real.
Magical thought is when we see past the logic, past the reasoning. It is physically impossible for humans to climb up walls, shoot web, or have superior vision or hearing. But we see past it, and it gives us a little more hope, and a little more confidence that there is something better out there. We choose to believe in magical thought, even if it can be proven false.
I believe in magical thought. Sometimes it is nice to think that somewhere, there might be something happening that goes past proof, past facts, and past anything that is instilled in us at an early age.
I believe that magical thought can mean many different things. As Shayna said, magical thought can mean someone uses their imagination to develop their own perspective. When you think of magic in this way, of course you'll believe in it. It allows each and every person to have a sense of individuality in their thoughts and beliefs.
On the other hand, when a person thinks of magic as fairies and things like that, they don't tend to believe in it as much even though they did when they were younger.
Therefore I think that no matter what, a person will always believe in some type of magical thought at some point in their life.
My belief in magical thought depends on the definition of magical thought. I do believe in religion; catholicism and a higher power. However I do not believe in things like magic as in magic shows, tricks, or anything like that. I think that things like fairies, Santa, and magic tricks are types of things you outgrow as you get older. I think that kind of thought is just childish and something that seems real when you are young. So in that case I do believe in certain things like Heaven, God, and miracles. So, in conclusion, I think my belief in magical thought largely depends on its definition, I don't think that religion and things like that even belong in the same category as things like magic tricks and witchcraft.
To me there are two different definitions for what a magical thought is. One could be the "magical fantasy creatures" that we see in cartoons and movies. Like dragons, witches and mermaids, and myths such as the tooth fariy, Santa clause, and even Moses. Another is to have such belief in something and it becoming a reality. Such as wanting it to rain and just hoping and wishing, then it becoming a real life outcome. So do i believe in either of these? Well, I do not believe in mermaids and dragons, but i do believe that if you want something bad enough and really think of it becoming a reality it can be a possibility. The thing is, we all used to believe in Santa Clause, in mermaids, well at least I did. But, as we grew we were thought logical reasons for why it was impossible that there was no such things as these "Magical" thoughts.
There are parts of me that do believe in magical thought and parts of me that don't. For someone to say I believe in fairies, witches and dragons sounds ridiculous to me. So I obviously don't believe in mythical creatures. The magical thought that I believe in is that there is a God or a higher power. If I did believe in mythical creatures I would wish that vampires existed. Due to the fact I'm like obsessed with the Twilight series. But on a more serious note I truly believe there is a higher power watching over us influencing the decisions we make.
When I was younger my wish was to be magic. I always wanted to fly and magically appear in new places. When I was about 9 my dad told me that Santa Claus didn't exist and I remember being upset. Everything I had believed in was now fake and that was very disappointing for me. So I would say that most people believe in magical thought at some point in their life. But as a 16 year old now I do not believe in the tooth fairy, the easter bunny, or any Halloween creatures. I do however believe in God and angels. I believe that there is a higher power watching over us. My sign is pisces so I am very creative and I love to imagine new things. But I would not consider imagining something to be magical because sometimes they could turn out real. If you let your mind wonder like in a day dream you can create whatever you desire. But in a dream at night one's subconscious mind takes over and magical thought can happen.
I do and do not believe in magical thought. To me, magical thought gives people the ability to have an imagination and think of all these abnormal, crazy things. I believe that with out imagination, life would be boring. Part of me believes that there is a magical power that lives out their somewhere. Not like dragons, witches, and fairies. There are events that happen that cannot be explained. Things like this make me believe in magical thought. For me, God could be a magical power. Some people seem like they know that God exists but I'm waiting for something to happen in my life that proves there is a God watching over us. The reason why their is a part of me that does not believe in magical thought is because as a little kid you believed in all these unrealistic things like the Easter bunny, tooth fairy, and Santa. But when you grow up and realize they never exist, it is like your whole world fell apart. That is why I do not want to believe in magical thought because I do not want to be disappointed when I find out the truth.
I think Magical thought is when you believe in something outside of science and reason. When you look to other causes for the answer. For example if someone comes in with a tumor and is suppose to have surgery but when they come back for the surgery the tumors gone how do you explain that? But of course i dont believe in Santa or the tooth fairly anymore becuse i know they are my parents. But tumors disappearing, surviving a plane crash, or anything like that i believe in something bigger than me but it doesnt necessarily have to be god. The term god comes with to many connotations. I also think the word MAGICAL makes it seem to juvenile. When i hear the word Magical i think of little kids and stupid stuff i did when i was younger, not intellegent educated thought. I don't know why but i am more comfortable using the words mysterious, supernatural, or strange because those words are more abstract. They don't require you to believe in anything.
I think there are different levels to magical thought, some can be on the level of ghosts and God and others on witches and stuff like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. I believe in ghosts and I believe in psychics, I’ve had a ghost haunt every house I’ve ever lived in and I have had extensive associations with psychics and past lives. I have my own reason and proof to believe in magical thought, but it’s most commonly known as the supernatural. I don’t believe there are witches out there, or elf’s and hobbits. I think that other people disbelieve in the same as I don because of their up brings, their surrounding, and that they are attached to science and reason
No I do not believe in magical thought. I believe in science and reason. It is not physically possible for magic to occur. Magicians claim to do magic, but it is all camera angles, trap doors, lightning effects, and smoke and mirrors. Magical creatures do not exist either. There is no physical evidence or proof to show their existence. I think most magic that people believe comes from their imagination. People will also use magic to explain something they do not understand.
I do believe in magical thought because like a few other people said, I think it mostly has to do with imagination. I’m pretty sure we have all believed in magical thought at one point or another, whether it was Santa Claus, superheroes or unicorns! Little kids have a tendency of letting their imaginations take them away and I love it! We could all use a little more imagination from time to time. We all know now Santa isn’t real but growing up it was something we loved to believe in. To me, Magical thought is really seeing past what we really know and believing in something we don’t think could happen.
When the word magic comes to my head I recall when I was a little girl and I was about five years old and I lost a tooth. I remember getting twenty dollars for it! I was one of the happiest kids on earth. However as I got older my beliefs in magic started to fade away. I figured out that the tooth fairy was simply my mother and that no other surreal person existed. This had made me to believe that magical thought is not real and that people put these ideas in our mind and expect us to believe. Magic is something that was around since our great grandparents were our age so therefore it has made its toll on every individual. Some people still do believe in magical though but I think its based on a matter of your own personal beliefs. Believing in magic to me is almost like believing in getting a million dollars tomorrow, it doesn’t seem right. Young children are obligated to believe their parents because that is all they know but as a child gets older they become into their own person and start to believe what they want to believe.
Magical thought can be interpritated so many different ways. No I don't believe in wizards, dragons and fairies because there is no proof. So what about God? Is there any proof of Him? The Bible? I really don't know, it's beyond my realms of knowledge. But I agree with Anastasia when she says she believes there is "magic" per say, in every individual. When couples get together is what they feel magic? Is love magic? It's just such a broad term it's hard to comprehend.
On another note, I don't believe immagination has anything to do with magic.
Magical thought is the idea of believing in ideas outside of our realm of control. In our time and age where science is dominant and many things in life have been mathematically proven, it is hard to place value on such thoughts of life being out of our control. Believing purely in faith alone is naivety at its best. Humans desire to have a "higher being" so they can feel like they can be helped. Egyptians placed Gods over all things so they can pray for its help and we think that is weird. But who is to judge on our God/ religions. They are not that much different than other religions and cults. Having magical thoughts is one going into ones own dimension and wanting to alter reality with hope. Just because one believed that one could do something is different than one doing it. I believe that we make our own decisions and it is not based on fate that guides us. I am a Christian and I sound like a complete hypocrite. I just need proof that there is a higher being in the universe which is impossible or the proof is to sketchy. Yes, there are things called miracles but just because we cant explain it doesn’t mean that it was the reason for a higher being/ Even if one puts that one happiness on a higher being, how about all the disease, famine, hurricanes, and genocide in the world. Do we blame our higher beings? No we do not. It is great to think about magical thought to spark imagination. Imagination is important overall. But when a person starts confusing real life with his imagination is where it gets too far. When one believes he can fly by chanting a spell is illogical or shooting lightning bolts from your hands if you do a Harry Potter spell. Everyone has read fantasy books in there life. From Lord of the Rings to Harry Potter. They are great books and I am not denouncing their value. If you can find me an elf and an ogre or fly on a broomstick we can start discussing whether magic is real or not.
I DO believe in magical thought because I am a creative person. And BTW justin, $20? when i lost my tooth, I got a silver dollar. No, I don't believe in magic like fairy tales and Santa Claus. But I loved magic tricks when I was a kid. And now, being into photography, "magic" has a different meaning. Just like with magic tricks, you can create an illusion to make people believe something. It gets people thinking. It's an art form. And so with photography, I aim to create "magical" photos that allow people to use their imagination, wonder where a photo might have been taken, dream of going to that place, or just believe that there is something that is beyond the realm of imagination. I won't get into astronomy and the universe, but that's another subject that has a lot of unexplained answers out there waiting to be discovered. And the Mayans and other ancient civilizations all thought it was magic. But now we know much more about it.
I believe in magical thought because there are many phenomena in this world that cannot be explained with modern science. For example, in ancient times their were many different cultures that had the dragon in their history and lore. However, none of these cultures had any contact with each other. Many of them were on the other side of the planet.
Another example would be the Nazca lines. They have been in place for millenia. How did these mysterious geoglyphs get "carved" into the earth? Was it an ancient advanced culture? An ancient alien race? MAGIC? Nobody knows. What do you believe?
I believe in magical thought. I believe that religion in a way is magical thought. A belief in God and miracles is also a belief in magical thought. I consider anything that is beyond human understanding as magical thought. Magical thought gives the world hope and we need it to survive. Manbearpig for life!
Whether or not magical thought exists depends on the definition of magical thought. People use thoughts to solve problems using logic, while magic is something that defies logic. I think magical thought is based on the existence of higher powers that we cannot exert control over. I guess I would define magical thought as religion, the idea that there is a god that can defy logic as we know it. In our society, there are many acceptable religions. In history, I argue that religion becomes less prominent as technology develops. And in our technologically developed world, I can't say if there is such a being that can defy the laws of everything. I suppose it is possible that magical thought exists, but I'm not sure if my logical mindset could accept it if it did.
One view of what magic is could be defined in the existence of a greater being. I used to believe in such a thing, but the more that i break down the idea, the more i come to question it. It is not that i do not believe in a greater being, but nothing has happened in my life so far that proves to me that a God does exist.
Another definition of magical thought is mystical creatures, such as mermaids, fairies, and wizards. I wish i could say that i do believe in creatures of such sort, however i do not.
My last definition of magic, is that magic that lyes in the human race. and yes, I do believe that magic lyes within all human beings. It just depends those who decide to act upon that magic and those who do not.
The bottom line is, i truly hope that magic is real. I hope that a God does exist, and even though i do not believe in fairies and mermaids, i do still hope that one day something will happen that proves me wrong. Because if you really think about it, hope is all we have, its what keeps us going when all else fails.
I definately do not believe in magical thought. Many of the invented beliefs of Santa Clause, unicorns, etc. I believe were made so that people would have something to live forward to everyday. The spirit of Christmas comes from people loving and caring and not from santa. They are just imaginations that people can come up with. Some are good, others are even bad, but either way they have been thought of by a person. I do no recall hearing anything about big foot being around. Someone just came up with the idea of "Big Foot". Magical thought reflects even to the Bible, where there is a devil and a God. No one truly knows if there is a God but they live by believing or not everyday. It is definately a guidance for many people. But I do not believe such matters exist, but I do believe they were made up. It's not a bad thing obviously, but sometimes it gets too out of hand.
Umm, i do not believe in magical thought because there is no such thing. If Santa Clause was real, it would be in the newspapers or something. Parents just made their kids happy by putting a little fun of unreal things. I use my imagination to figure out false imaginations of magical thoughts. Like one christmas, at home i get all the presents unwrapped. When i have christmas in New York at my grandma's, i see that all the gifts are in boxes that my parents sent to New York and put there at Christmas Eve Night. Well, I haven't really figured out the tooth fairy as my parents because i'm usually in my deep sleep. But, I figured out a little by like I count all the days up by the missing days that my tooth is still there. And i say like it's my 100th night that i haven't gotten no money. Then the next morning i get a hundred dollar bill. That is wierd, and at Easter when i was little, i kind of figured out that my parents put carrots from the refigerator or something and go all the way outside. Wierd, all wierd, yeah too wierd. I DO NOT BELIEVE in magical thought
p.s. havent figured out if God is real or not real...you only will know after your death :P

WOW NICK! bravo!
I both do and do not believe in magical thought.
