"When the going gets weird, the wierd turn pro. " - Hunter S. Thompson

Explain what Hunter meant by this quote. Is this quote applicable to life as an American? Does it fall within the boundaries of your life? Does it apply to your generation? and how or how not? What is weird?

I think this quote means that when things that were once considred weird become common place they become insanely popular.

Or, more accurately, when things get weird in the world, thats's when people who are considered odd have their moment to shine or their "odd talents" are considered usefull and benificial.

I do not particularly like this quote due to the fact that it is written very informally. Although, it teaches a lesson unnoticeable to the base of society, or the center of the gradient.

The people in our society who are viewed, in this case, as weird are in the extremes of society's gradient. These individuals become powerful once their extremism, or weirdness, becomes the norm of society. This is due to the fact that they are already odd, so once society becomes odd, they are the elite of the society.

I personally think this is a somewhat accurate statement. I can relate to this in fashion, music, and with anything that is popular. For example, when new genres of music are created, they are generally looked down upon by the norm of society. Sooner of later, this genre becomes popular due to a shift in people's tastes in music.

When the going gets weird the weird turn pro” this quote when Shipley first said it was mind confusing but after thinking about it it made perfect sense to me. This quote is saying that when something turns weird the weird turn into pros. I can relate to this in several aspects of my life. An example was with a current boyfriend that I no longer have. Of course in the beginning of any relationship you are filled with a light that is unexplainable but I had a feeling that things were not going to be okay. Everything started to get weird nothing made sense anymore and I was starting to figure what he was all about. Certain things that were said were on my mind and I was constantly thinking about what I could have meant without thinking the worst. Soon enough I got with the program sure I felt super weird being in the position that I was in but I soon turned pro at the situation. I was way ahead of him in a game that was weird but I was the one to turn pro because I went with my instinct. In today’s society I am positive that this quote can relate to anyone if you think about what it means and the situation that you are in. My generation is filled with new experiences every day but looking back at this quote will help because in every weird situation the weird turn into pros. Weird is referring to people or anything that is in a weird situation and has the courage to figure out what is wrong and how to fix it. The human mind is always wanting to figure out certain issues that are mind puzzling and at time you may feel weird but at the end of the day you have the satisfaction that being weird turns you into a pro.

To me this quote means that when an uncommon event happens, the people affected are usually those that are not common. The "uncommon's" become common and those that were common become uncommon.

This quote is actually confusing in many ways. However, I find this quote to be somewhat true in america today. Many weird things have happened this year alone with the "Recession?" and the market being worth a lot less. But, once oil prices go down and the savings are passed onto americans the market suddenly rebounds and is starting a slow climb back to where it was. That is how this quote is true in America today and the better question is was this a set up by our own government to scare us into buying more American Goods? Like the quote says "When the going get weird, the weird turn pro".

To me this quote means that when new events occur, the ones that are prepared are the ones that we look up to. For instance, many new technologies have come about across the years such as lab tops or cell phones. At first people who had them were considered weird because no one had ever seen them before. But once the devices became popular so did the people who owned them. This relates to America today in fashion and music. New styles of fashion might be looked at as weird or different but once you see it on your favorite celeb you began to like it. The same goes with music. You may hear a song for the first time and think that it's strange but once you hear your friends singing along to it, it eventually gets stuck in your head. Altogether, new things that may be looked down upon now may be inspiring us in the near future.

I believe the quote means that when someone that was once weird is now considered normal, those once considered weird are smiled upon. They excel at the task that was once considered weird but is now normal.

For example, one year people may think it is weird to play a musical instrument. The next year, it may be considered cool. Those who started in the second year are not likely to be as talented as those who started in the first year. At the time, what they did was considered weird. But now, they are excelling in something considered normal. They are the "pros".

Hunter S. Thompson probably said this to hint about some of his own life experiences. While his early career may have been frowned upon, later in his life he became successful doing what he want to. When his ideas became popular, "the norm", his once "weird" way of thinking influenced a social and cultural movement, and now he has risen above and become the "pro".

The quote "when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro" by Hunter S. Thompson somewhat explains what happens when weird and unusual things are seen or made.
In the world now, new inventions in technology, fashions, music, and events that unfamiliar to people are happening and being discovered. When you first see them, you might think of them as weird and strange, but once everyone has one or likes what they see, everyone follows.
One example that really struck the U.S. was the ipod. Who would think you could fit all your cd in to this piece of technology? But now, there is not one person that does not have one. You see them everywhere, in movies, TV shows commercials.
The quote explains the cycle of how the world evolves with new ideas.

I think what Hunter meant by this quote was that when issues become difficult or strange to people, the stronger people work for it and become the best they can be.

Hunter S. Thompson’s quote can be related to different issues. This quote can be applicable to the life as an American, because an American works hard to become successful in life. Surprisingly, this quote actually falls into the boundaries of my life as well. The way I try hard in school to get into a good college and to eventually have a steady job. Hunter’s quote can also relate to my generation. Now, classes in high school have AP classes which are also known as college course classes. These classes academically challenge students more and also look excellent on college applications. So, students now are able to try even harder and become more successful in life. There can be many different ways to analyze Hunter S. Thompson’s quote, but I believe what he meant by weird, he meant complicated.

"When the going gets weird, the weird turns pro." means that when something or someone that was strange before has become the norm, it is widely accepted. This quote is applicable to life as an American. Many things we do today and people who are praised today were weird when they were staring out. It does apply to our generation because there also weird things occurring in our lives right now, but in few years they will be accepted as if they were always there. Weird is something that people view as odd or unusual.

I believe that this quote describes society very well. "when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." I believe that it shows society as a progressive and slowing movement. As it says, there are the going and there are the weird. Thegoing seem to be the pregressing kind of people in society and the weird are the slowing type. So when the going gets weird, all of society becomes weird, or slows, and that makes the original weird people, or slow people, pro. In a way you can call them leaders not followers, but in my opinion, I do not believe that to be a good thing. I may have misunderstood the quote, which is vgery likely, but this was my view of the quote.

I think that this quote means that at first something may be weird but then it just becomes common and therefore not weird. I connect this to almost every fad ever. For example, whoever thought that those Kanye West glasses with the lines that go through it that you can barley even see out of, were cool, then there is something very wrong with them. But now they are everywhere and it has become a normal accessory (Which is terrible, those things look ridiculous).

"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." I believe this quote means when someone who is different or to other people considered "weird" that they turn out to be stronger then normal people who are all alike and not "weird." When Shipley had first told us to blog on this I was very confused about what it meant and how I was going to actually be able to blog on such a weird topic like this one, but after taking the time to actually think about it, I realize that this quote makes perfect sense to me. Another assumption for this quote from my opinion would be that something that was weird to us before has become the norm to us that it is accepted from all of us. Many of the things that are happening today or what we do today were probably weird to us back then but now they are accepted everywhere around us. This was my opinion or estimation on this quote and every one else's were very precise and logic.

I think what Thompson meant by this is about fitting in with the norm. Weird people are always there whether it’s at a job, a party, in school, or on a sports team. But what makes them weird? They don’t act like everyone else? They don’t say what you expect them to say? Well what would happen to these people if everyone started acting like this? Those people are no longer considered weird, because everyone is similar to them.

This can go back to the herd mentality blog, basically what the majority says goes. If everyone is weird, nobody is. Therefore, the weird people are now in with the crowd, and they turn “pro”.

Alright Shipley, these blogs are getting quite ridiculous. But anyways, to answer the question “ When the going gets weird, the wired turn pro.” – Hunter S, Thompson, this quote really means that in the beginning something could be weird, but once you adapt it to it, becomes normal. How ridiculous this quote really is, it truly is a life lesson. Like my fellow classmates said, the people who are said to be weird are in the middle of our society. Once they overcome and overpower their extremism, they will be considered normal people. Most people who are considered weird are more and likely to be very intelligent. They are the ones who create technology, and invent items for our future. Weird people, also known as nerds make a difference in our society, and turn pro.

"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro."

This quote first seems confusing. In my opinion it means that when things become weird, weird becomes the norm. This is true in life today. Many things that are new or different in society become common and a normal idea of object. Whoever thought up the idea for the first microwave was most likely laughed at and thought to be crazy, but now people are considered crazy for not owning a microwave! This happens with many things in like. Weird is anything out of the normal, but when enough becomes weird, it becomes the normal.

Julie Desiderio said...

I think this quote means that when a person approaches something weird in their life, instead of letting that bother them they just go with the flow. When I say "go with the flow" I am referring to the part of Thompson's quote that says "the weird turn pro." In more detail, when things get weird (or any other adjective that could describe a situation), just become weird and the situation will become almost normal. When the situation is considered "normal", than as the quote says, the person will become PRO at dealing with it. I think this quote applies to every single American in some way, shape or form. It falls within the boundaries of my life because I can honestly say I relate to this quote on so many different levels. I think this quote applies to not only my generation, but all the generations before me as well. The way that I view this quote, it is referring to life situations and I think that there will be different life situations for the people in all generation. And to answer the question about what weird is, I think I answered it above. Weird could be anything that is not considering feelings of the average day. So, for example, weird could be sad, angry, stressed, irritated, annoyed, flustered etc.

If I am correct on my analysis on this quote, then I really feel I relate. A situation I have experienced that I feel relates to this quote was when I was at a friends house one time. Her entire extended family was in town and they were just an awkward family. At dinner, they made weird remarks that at first made me feel really uncomfortable but soon after that I realized I had to get with it to get through it! I joined in with my own weird sense of humor and sure enough I was the PRO in the situation and the night ended up being really fun.

""When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.” I am confused about this topic because it is not ever used. My best guess to what this quote represents shows me that it could mean ideas which were once considered weird, have become the norm to society. Once norm, they have an advantage over others. I define weird as in a unique person that challenged the flow of society.

This idea has popped up many times in history. Not allot of people know about it but when books were first developed, hey faced many obstacles and reasons that they would be a pain more than benefit. Now in our society, books are well known and the people who brought the books to be known were famous writers that influenced other people.

It is quite applicable in our society; there are people who develop new technologies that people question. The idea of cloning is considered weird and morally incorrect but in the future it could have astounding results in the field of science. There will be new cures and new invention that will have many consequences.

His idea can also apply to our generation. There are many trends that start and leave as fast as it starts. There are people who dress weird but maybe the next day, that style will be liked and the person will become popular.

Answering this wierd quote "When the going gets wierd, the wierd turns pro"-Hunter S. Thompson. Well it is too wierd to answer this quote, umm, like comparing to baseball but in a very opposite way. For instance, Babe Ruth was a hero or a pro. Now modern days, there are alot of great athletes being called pros when if you compare each athlete, it is just normal to them. And btw, i liked Charlie's blog of saying of nerds in our society. I would also like to add there also noobs in our society. Ranked #1 noob is charlie (the big common one). :O

What Thompson means by this quote is that when weird things happen, it is the people that aren't completely normal, that our a little strange themselves know what to do in that situation. They aren't afraid to do what they think is right. This does apply to an American and the boundaries of life because when something out of the ordinary does happen, most people who are normal just stand around and hope that an idea would come to them or that something will happen to get them out of the mess. Most Americans try to be normal and fit in, but when a something happens they don't know what to do because they are not used to unusual circumstances, only normal ones. That is why it applies to our generation because everybody just wants to fit in.

Weird is something that we are not used to. Something that is unusual from our point of view. People today consider somebody weird if they don't like the "popular music" or same movies. Even somebody who devotes most of their time to school can be considered weird by people in today's world

I think this quote means that things that may seem weird now wont be in the future. I think a good example of this is space. Copernicus was the first to say that the sun was the center of the universe and everybody thought he was crazy, but today we know he wasnt crazy he was right!
Yes it is applicable to American lifestyle but that doesnt matter because it applies to everybody not just Americans. Every culture has experienced something similar. Even Hunter S Thompson is an example. Many people condenemed him for writing about drug use and using expletives and to this day some people still feel the same way. However, today we can regonize his inovation and courage in writing with a new voice. Furthermore this quote gives the younger generation courage to stand out fromt the crowd and be different.

Hunter Thompson was a cool guy who wrote Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I know that because it's one of my dad's favorite books. So I heard a lot of Hunter Thompson from him. I think what he meant by that quote is that when things turn out strange, when things get tough, when times are difficult to deal with, those people who seem somewhat strange to others are really the smartest ones and deal with the situation in the right way. They are the ones who step up to the plate. Even though they act weird sometimes, they may be the brightest of anyone and so they're there when it's needed.

And...when Hunter Thompson killed himself a year or so ago, he had some of his friends like Johnny Depp and Bill Murray and his wife fulfill his final dream - to be shot out of a cannon on his ranch in Colorado. Awesome!

I interpreted Thompson's quote to mean that when someone is skilled at something that is invaluable at the time, nobody really pays any attention. However, when that skill becomes valuable that person is suddenly looked upon for being good at what they do. Now, as for what "weird" means, I just think that it is something or someone that is unordinary, and sometimes seemingly unvaluable. I'm not sure that I would say it is applicable to life as an American specifically, but rather just to society in general. I think it is common in all places of the world for situations like this to arise, where someone obtains a skill that becomes more valuable over time. This being said, I think it definatley falls withing the boundries of my life and my generation. I think it could be compared to wearing a certain trend that is not in style at the time, and being looked down upon. Of course when this trend comes into style, the person who has been wearing it all this time will have mastered it by then.

This quote is one I do not particularly find interesting, or rather understandable. It does however allow me to ponder several different ideas but overall it lacks meaning.

When the going gets weird, to me relates to life turning inside out. Now, I am not a reader of Hunter S. Thompson so I could be totally wrong, but to me thats what this out of context quote means. The part about the weird turning pro I do not understand at all, it just doesn't hold any water.

Context or lack of, it is a quote to ponder the meaning of. I can not say if it applies to American life as I do not understand the basis of the quote. But I can make a comment on my opinion of weird. Very simply put my definition of weird is normal. Someone who is unique and cannot be told to be the same as another. I guess you could say my definition of not-weird is boring. Individuals and possibly idealists can be considered weird, as normal. Society would be nowhere if it were not for these people. People who take the status quo are fine with todays society and the cards they were dealt, to me thats boring and not weird, not normal, not human.

Jessica Regina said...

“When the going gets weird the weird turn pro.” I think this quote means that what people consider weird eventually becomes normal. Usually when people think things are weird, in a few years or sometimes even less, that weird thing becomes the newest and coolest trend that everyone follows. I think this defiantly applies to life today and my generation because high school is on of the times where people try new things and try to find what works for them.

I don’t think you can define what is “weird.” I guess today we sometimes consider something unique or unfamiliar weird.

"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." I think this quote means that when things get weird the people who are considered "weird" become the professionals. Since they are weird they know weird things the best. Meaning that when a situation turns weird, they are the ones to turn to for advice, hence them turning pro. When I first saw this quote it reminded me of quote, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." I think they both mean about the same thing, which is that when situations become something like weird or tough, those who are most like the described situation do the best.

I honestly don’t understand this quote, I have no idea what the man is trying to say. I think what he’s saying when gages first started everyone thought it was weird but now that they are popular, the people who did it first are the pros. Or like when we watch America’s Got Talent, things we consider weird is still talent. I don’t know

hillary nadler said...

I think what this quote means is that there are always going to be times that get a little strange, and that will just bring out the strange people. It doesn’t mean that this is a time for them, but they know how to deal with change and weirdness the best out of everyone else. They are the ones most open to change, and eventually people will possibly start to follow them and see that whatever the change may be, that it’s not weird at all, just needed.

Tal Oringer said...

I believe this quote means that when things get kinda tough for a while, people might act strange to cope with their struggles, and by doing that you see their true behavior which can be a good thing. You learn to trust them, if they can be trusted, and things about them because of their weird behavior. Its a good thing because maybe, you see how they work under pressure and if they are a good friend or just another person who cant handle the pressure and is just weird.

I strongly agree with Sarah about Hunter Thompson's quote. I think it means that what people consider weird now, might be what is considered cool next year or next week or tomorrow. And those that were already looked down upon as "weird" are now "cool" and all the posers that are trying to be cool, are now really behind those who were considered weird. I deffintly think it applies to this generation because everything "retro" is being brought back, in fashion and in music. I remember my mom trying to get me to wear her flannel shirt back in 6th grade and I turned up my nose in disgust. Now, I wear a flannel jacket almost everyday.

And really who has the right to label this weird and this not weird. We're all weird in the scheme of things.

Shayna said...

When I first read this quote I thought it was extremely confusing. But now i understand it and interpreted it to say that "when the going" meaning the normal trends that everyone is following "gets weird" the normal trends become weird and unusual "the weird turn pro" the people that weren't following the normal trends and were already following this weird trend before it became popular are now not looked at as being weird, but as being "pro" because they've been following that trend longer than anyone else and so they know more than everyone about it.

If that was insanely confusing, it's basically saying that when something normal turns weird, it's the already weird people that become 'normal' & elite.

Tori Voges said...

In my opinion, Hunter S. Thompson meant that when uncommon, or weird things happen or are created, at first they seem unusual and strange to the human race. But after when we become accustomed to those unusual inventions, suddenly they do not seem so strange after all, in fact they become extremely common and popular.
I think that this applies to almost everyone in the world. We all tend to not accept things we are not used to at first, yet when we learn what does not meet the eye in the beginning, we warm up to those things.

Oliver said...

I agree with many of the other posts, and I think this quote means that when something previously considered weird becomes socially acceptable, those who were good at it are considered pro. At least, that's my take on it. This quote is very simple, and also applicable to the world. I like how Hunter S. Thompson is able to use slang, and still come up with a meaningful quote. Oh, and the second "weird" in the title is spelled wrong Ship. =D

Alex Jaffe said...

I believe that this quote is completely true. Everyone is weird in his or her own way, and everyone has his or her own time to shine. In this case, weird people shine when the "going" gets weird. (By the way Ship, you spelled the second weird wrong.)

Neda said...

Like Mikaela said, I also think that this quote means that someone is only looked up to for their skills when their skills show some type of value. I think that we live in a world where many people are looked down upon for things they're good at if these such things aren't very important. To me, what Thompson is trying to say is that what may be considered "weird" one day, may not be some other day. I think he is trying to show that when something "weird" becomes of use, the "weird turn pro" because of their strengths in such things.

Alex said...

It means that in American society, the ones who are usually outcast are the ones that are suprisingly prpared for what is coming in the future, IE will not be surprised if somehow a country invaded the US. The outcast likely has tons of Ammo and food so no worries.

I do not understand this quote. I am confused by "the weird turn pro." Does this mean that weird people become the important figures in the world? Does it mean that a weird term can become a term used in the professional world? I do not know if this applies to my generation because I do not fully understand what this quote means. I cannot define the word "weird" because it is always changing. I guess that "weird" is just something that is not commonplace.

This quote is drugs related,

When the going gets weird, if you are very high on several kind of drugs normal people cant handle it and start to act very weird(the going gets weird), but there are a few people who love those situations as Hunter himself and in this stage of absolute no sense at all he or anyone who can handle this stage of mind turn pro, they carry on and start to get really deep in to the weirdness of a higher state of mind, that is what he means, you have to had the experience with lots of druhgs especially lcd yourself to understand this I suppose.

Unknown said...

When previously unaccepted ideas/behaviors become socially acceptable, people who were emblematic practitioners thereof seek to make money off of the change. Hunter may have been slighting blatant commercialism in pop culture amongst the "avant-garde". He was conservative despite his own eccentric behavior.

Unknown said...

"When the going gets weird; The Weird turn pro."

What HST left out is "can" between turn & pro - this because "do", "must", and so forth could be fitted equally well and . . . his intention was inclusion.

The World is filled with weirdos. But when The World is normal The Weird are subdued by the overarching weight of normalcy and so their weirdness does not manifest substantially. But when The World gets weird - The Weird are less burdened by normalcy and they, as he concisely summed it: Turn Pro. And then all kinds of weird shit runs rampant.

Unknown said...

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. - This is about trusting your intuition. If something feels weird or off about a person, watch yourself, trust your gut, because there is a reason why you’re feeling it. Below the surface, murky, muddy things are going on, and they are hiding it from you. Just know that these weirdos are very good at deception.
