Why did the wife kill herself? Why did the boy just accept the fact that she was gone without even seeming to be upset? What could have caused this apocalyptic version of Earth? The author said it blotted out the sun. What could do that besides a nuclear holocaust?

I'd imagine the wife killed herself because the stress of living the life described in the book proved to be too much.
In the book, the father and son run from other people in fear. Why do they do this? What do they think will happen to them?
I think the reason behind the apocalyptic version is deeper. It may be a metaphor for the dark times in the world and the corruption in society.

The boy calmly had been sitting on some steps until, he observed a little boy no older than himself across the rear of a house. Curiously, the boy sprints to the house and examines the backyard, but there had been no boy. The dad then finds him and tells him what's he doing, do you want to die? This scene confuses me, because it makes me think does the boy have an illness of seeing people? Or was the boy really there?

It is quite sad to see how the women died but the man had lived on with his son. The book had gotten quite interesting when i starts to mention about the other groups of people. It peaked my interest and got me wanting to read on about what happends between the son and man against these lawless people. It amazes me how a man can keep caring for his son in such a situation. His love for he child has allowed him not to give up on him and leave him behind.
Were there people in the town that the man and child went into? Why were they hiding, and once the man realized his son saw a boy they had to leave? Throughout the story the author constantly mentions about the road. After every crisis they go through it always says that they go back on the road. It symbolizes a goal and a hope for this man and boy who wants to go South. We do not know what he wants to accomplish but we know that the man always walks on the barren road.

i am interested about how the father and son are going to survive and other future events that might occur between the boy and father against the the other people.

Also the author does a good job on expressing the environment and give precise deatils to show how the boy and father must be feeling. The description also supports that there was a apocalyptic event of sorts. For example of how it snows and after its done, there is always ash on it. This means that there were alot of things that were burned down or destroyed. There were some mentions of more dead bodies and also of destroyed trees and lands.

Well, the plot thickens.

Now it seems we have some "bad guys" in the story now. I think they're some form of post-apocalyptic gang to me. I think they’re heading the same place as the father and son.
Who are these people? Why are they considered bad guys?

And we have more details about the death of the man’s wife. I believe she killed herself with the gun, notably when the author alludes to "back when the gun had three bullets" gives you a haunting allusion to how she died. As to why she may have killed herself she probably lost hope, saying that the life they were living wasn't really surviving, that they were the "living dead" walking this barren world. She was probably weak from giving birth to her son, and that she probably couldn’t survive for much longer anyway. Although, I do think it was a bit harsh and hasty of her not to say goodbye to her son before she died.

Plus in addition to the "bad guys" It seems that there are other survivors living in the top stories of abandoned houses. Why are they up there? Are they hiding from something? I believe we will have these questions answered in the next segment.

The father and son run into lots of people but the father never wants to help them. The boy always ends up feeling bad that they didn't do anything. Then the father was talking to "her" ...was she really there or was she like an angel watching over them? Then they supposedly had a gun with only 2 bullets left and the son wanted to die so that he could be with his mom am I right? I'm confused about what happened when the father ran into those men with the guns. Who are they and why are they bad? Later on the boy says that he sees another little boy his age and gets happy but the father tells him not to do anything about it. They also see a dog that they do not help either. The boy gets mad at Papa and they don't talk for a while. But what I don't understand is where they are or what happened to the world. And why do they want to head south, what is there?

From what I have read so far it seems that the father really loves his boy and will do anything to protect him even kill someone. What I wonder though is if he would sacrifice himself to protect his son if the danger is that great.

I believe the book has progressed greatly since the first 45 pages.

I was sitting on the plane while reading this book. When I got to the part where they see the man in the mask and papa is pointing the gun at him, I literally gasped so loud that the people sitting around me look at me as if I was crazy. This shows how the vivid detail that I originally disliked so much in actuality paints a truly invoking and interesting picture and ideas in my mind.

I have become enthralled in this book and extremely confused. I believe the author is an excellent writer because he is taking you into the story. He makes you question the characters, plot and premise of the book.

I was truly interested in how he introduced the mother. At first I was confused, then once I understood it was a flash back, I was able to fully appreciate the sadness. It was so upsetting to see this woman so weak and defeated. However, after hearing her views I started to believe that she could in fact be correct; maybe life in their situation wasn’t worth living. Maybe, the father was too selfish to let her and his son go. Now the son is constantly scared and struggling to live everyday. However, on the other side, I think the mother is selfish for not trying to fight to live like her husband. If I was ever put in this situation I would like to think I would be as strong as the husband but fear that I would end up like the wife. Living this life is like waiting for death in pain and that scares me too much.

I am upset to see the life they are living. Thinking a world like this could exist honestly gives me great panic.

This book is alarming and engaging, although I am not sure where the story is headed, I can not wait to continue reading and find out. I think the sign of a good book is when you can not predict the next event or future of the plot and that is exactly how I feel about “the road”.

This book is proving to be very interesting. The author does a great job in keeping it suspenseful, giving just enough information so that you have an idea about what is going on, but you are still totally lost. Why did the wife keep calling herself a slut and a whore before she killed herself? Did the boy really see another kid? Who are the bad guys, what are they after, and where are they going? And how many people are still alive in the world? I hope the author can answer more of these questions as we keep reading.

The book really starts to pick up in these next 40 pages. I actually couldn't put it down and read way ahead. The boy seems so pure, trusting everyone, so innocent. The father knows better though, he knows the "bad guys" from the "good guys". Reading about the masked man threatening the boy and then the father having to wash blood and guts out of the boys hair a few pages later really created such an image. Scary almost, but oh so good. I think because this book is so out there, so different, it's very interesting. Not the norm teen book haha. I'm really enjoying it :)

I found it quite interesting when they finally met other people. They were hostile, but they were still people. The father killed one of them after the stranger grabbed and threatened his son. I found that quite interesting. The child seem to be extremely depressed and almost suicidal. I'm sad that the mother gave up because I know someone who almost gave up in a way similar to that.

Okay so maybe these "bad guys" are all the people who have gone mad and think everyone is out to get them, thats why the boy and father tried to hide. Also why did the woman kill herself? Did she kill herself before the disaster hit or after as a way to put herself out of misery. I have a feeling the sighting of the little boy by the son will come back further on in the book.I really dont understand why the little boy wants to die. He gives off the impression that he really does. Every other page he always asks the same question, "are we going to die? Are you going to miss me when i die? When are we going to die?" Are his spirits so down he has no faith in surviving this at all?

this book keeps me wanting to read it as much as i can. the description of everything makes it so real. but why did the wife kill herself? how did she kill herself? the father is a strong person for taking on the role of basically both parents and loving and caring for his son in the best way that he can but why does he kill the boy? who are the bad guys? were they on the bad side in the apocolypse? why doesnt the son really care about his mom dying? if my mom dies especially committing suicide i would be the biggest wreck on earth.

Now the book is starting to get a little more interesting. There are some flashbacks to help reveal the stories about the two people and how they got there. Also you see that the father will do anything to protect his son. He even tells him that he will kill anyone who harms him. That is why he used one of the bullets on the man who was attacking him. It will be interesting to see how they will use the last bullet. My prediction is that they will become cornered and the man will have to use it on his son so he won't be attacked by the savages.

AGain, this book has shown the father as a protagonist and introduced the marauders and other wicked people as the new antagonists. To me i have gained even further support that the father truly loves the child because of the scene with the masked man. He shot the man in the head and easily risked his life because the other enemies could hear it. He had lots of guts to be able to fire one at a guys head. IS the guy also a doctor becasue of teh way he talked to the guy about the brain which is mroe than an average person should know?

In these last 45 pages the life kills herself not because she cannot handle the situation but because if she loves her husband which she does blindly and compassionately then she must end her own life to save theirs. I believe that there was some kind of nuclear fallout that lead to the apocalypse world setting we are in right now and i believe the road is a metaphor for a path to salavation and freedom

Because of the lack of punctuation in the book i have found it really hard to understand when it goes into flash backs and when it gets out of them.

I found it interesting how on page 77 the boy asks if they were still the "good guys" after the dad killed someone. Who's to say that the boy and the man are the good guys? In my opinion there really are no good and bad guys everyone is just doing what they can to survive in their own way.

By the way, did the people with the masks eat the guy that the man killed?

I don't understand where the first bullet was. The wife said she was going to shoot herself when there was only two bullets in the gun, not three. So it makes you wonder what the man did with the first one. I think it foreshadows something about the father. Like he shot someone before the war & he was a bad person. something like that. I think her dying is going to have something more to do with their journey later in the book.

When the boy sees another kid but the dad doesn't, I think it symbolizes that the boy still has hope but the father doesn't. What i don't understand though, is if the father has lost all hope, then why are they still traveling?

One other thing i don't understand is how did they survive when basically everyone else died?

This book is really depressing. I still don't know what happened to all the people and why everything is burned up. The guy who got hit by lightning was cool with his bad leg. So I guess the mom died cuz they keep dreaming about her. I can't figure out if the biohazard guys are human or some weird creature. Kind of sucks that the dad has to give his kid a gun and tell him to shoot himself rather than be caught by creepy roadrat guy. That's sick washing brains out of the kid's hair. I guess the dog got eaten by someone. I'd rather eat a dog then dead turds. I think the other little boy maybe was an illusion? Grain sounds good for breakfast.
